POLICIES & GUIDELINES

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUTH CONFERENCE

A Spirit of Friendship:

Reach out to others. Try to make new friends. Be a friend. Look for opportunities to lift and encourage others.

A Spirit of Participation:

Join in activities. Be supportive. Include others and help them to have a great time.

A Spirit to Learn:

Be willing to learn new things. Ask questions. Answer questions. Teach others and be teachable. Listen to the Spirit and be willing to learn something new in all your activities.

TRANSPORTATION

Youth are not permitted to drive themselves or others to or from Anita Alta Horse Camp.

MEALS

Youth should eat breakfast at home and bring a bag lunch for check-in day on Thursday, June 20th.  Dinner will be the first meal served on trek the first day. Breakfast will be served on checkout day, Saturday, June 22nd, and a bag lunch will be given at check out to eat on the way home.

DRESS & APPEARANCE

Trek Attire is required for both young men and young women on the first and last days of Trek.

“Where possible, leaders and youth are encouraged to wear pioneer-style clothing or clothing that represents their own heritage or culture. Doing so helps participants immerse themselves in the trek experience and gain a sense of appreciation for their own ancestors."

In obtaining or making trek clothing, leaders and youth should not spend excessive time or money. Many items can be found in existing wardrobes or at second-hand stores.

Young Women:

Ideally, young women’s blouses should be lightweight and long-sleeved, and their skirts should reach the midcalf, with bloomers or shorts underneath to prevent chafing. Young women may choose to wear long khaki pants in lieu of a skirt if desired.

Young Men:

Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and comfortable, loose-fitting pants are recommended for the young men. Cotton fabrics are generally recommended

All Youth:

To help reduce the likelihood of blisters, participants are encouraged to wear (1) walking or hiking shoes that are broken in and (2) two pairs of socks at a time. Ideally the inner sock is thin and synthetic, while the outer sock is wool or a wool blend. Socks that wick away moisture are the most helpful. Socks that are a wool-synthetic blend can also help reduce the potential for blisters.

To help protect from sun and insects, participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats or bonnets, and sunglasses.

Simple patterns can be found in the Trek Handbook pg. 26-31.

Standards for dress & appearance will be consistent with the guidelines found in For the Strength of Youth:

Immodest clothing is any clothing that is tight, sheer, or revealing in any other manner. Young women should avoid short shorts and short skirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back. Young men should also maintain modesty in their appearance. Young men and young women should be neat and clean and avoid being extreme or inappropriately casual in clothing, hairstyle, and behavior. They should choose appropriately modest apparel when participating in sports.

TECHNOLOGY

Trek will be a technology-free youth conference. We will not have access to the internet while on trek. Ma’s and Pa’s will check in with parents of youth each day with any needed updates and we will post pictures of our experiences on our social media each day so families can see what the youth and leaders have been doing each day.  We recognize that youth rely on cell phones to be their cameras, alarm clocks, and scriptures, however, we ask that at this youth conference, youth do not bring their phones. Each chaperone and leader will have a phone to take pictures and to check in with parents of youth each day.

As convenient as cell phones are, they can be a frustrating and unwelcome distraction to both the user and to the people nearby. We believe cell phones would interrupt our Trek activities if all youth had them. In order to show courtesy and respect for everyone involved, please do not bring a cell phone or any such device during trek.

We want the atmosphere at trek to be both spiritual and social. Keep in mind that earbuds and cell phones typically isolate users and may limit the ability to communicate well with those around them.

OTHER EXPECTATIONS

We have great faith in our youth and their commitment to live by the standards in For the Strength of Youth.  Please understand that involvement in any of the following will result in being sent home immediately.
